When i was at the NMEA show last week if i had to pick one new item i was truly impressed with it is the Garmin Panoptix. I got to see the demonstration at the Garmin booth and at the inner harbor in Baltimore, MD aboard one of Garmins demo boats.
Basically all it is is a transducer. Two wires coming out of it one that plugs directly into the networking port of a garmin 721/741, 1000/800, 7600/7400, or 8000 series unit and a power wire so no black box needed. The transducer itself does all the work. Normally a transducer has 1 or 2 or maybe at most 4 sensors built into it to generate the sonar image. The garmin panoptix has OVER 100!! They wont tell us exactly how many or at what frequency they operate at because its "proprietary" but sure sounds impressive and expensive right? Well its not as bad as you would think $1499.99 MSRP and once you see this thing in action it will be worth every penny.
The Panoptix has 2 basic modes Livevu and Realvu which both have an impressive 140* of coverage. The Livevu is what most impressed me, instead of watching a scrolling history of whats under the boat it should a real time moving image across the whole screen. This will help you pinpoint exactly how far down and how far out to the side the target it and even which direction it is moving. Here is a video to help demonstrate what im referring to.
The Panoptix also has whats called Realvu, it is a constantly scanning 3d sonar that you can pan and tilt around to get the best representation of the stucture of the bottom and the marks that your picking up. This video shows a little of what both the livevu and realvu can do
