Howdy all. I have owned this motor since new. I would estimate well over 2000hrs on it. Been having a problem this season where it dies out when I try to put it in gear. Only in water, cannot recreate in the driveway on the muffs. I have cleaned and rebuilt the carbs and it has not helped. Performed compression test following seloc service manual instructions. Port side top is 100psi, bottom 103psi, starboard side top is 93psi, bottom is 88psi. Seems low. Any thoughts on what may be going on?

next step either pull cylinder head or send micro camera in compression should all be with in 5-10 lbs of each other any thing less requires further inspection sound like time for a ring and piston job or retirement or possibly just blown head gasket

Is the cylinder head hone-able? With nothing broken, can I get away with honing and new rings? If cylinder replacement is needed, can the jugs be removed without disconnecting from the cam?
I replaced head, water jacket and exhaust manifold gaskets 2 seasons ago. Plugs all look as they should.
Thanks for your time, Frank.

The cylinders wear but the ring glands on pictons wear more ring replacement should always be done with piston replacement if you catch it early enough you can give the cylinders a bump hone (not necessary to remove all scratches in cylinder walls ) but yes power head has to come off and completely dis assemble got to give this one some thought if its worth it? also rings can be inspected by removing the cylinder side intake covers you can look at rings as they pass the intake ports if you can see your self keeping boat another 10 years and being happy with it it time to put a brand new motor on it and if you used the boat a decent amount the gas saving alone in the summer months will make the payment for you. please call us for pricing we will beat any on line pricing no one beats our service www.facebook.com/BRPEvinrude/videos/10102051896131716/

Need to get 1 more season out of her. New boat next winter. Willing to dump some money and time in it. Realistically worth about 4K with a running motor. Don't want to go upside down when it's time to sell. you should reconsider fixing a bad motor to sell it to do one properly these days the average is just above 1000.00 per hole 4 cylinder 4000 and up 6 cylinder 6000 and up. Whats is one year of running motor worth especially if don't run rite ? There are plenty of guys that repowered a few years ago that are now faced with major repairs needed on transoms stringers and major components of the boat it self that will give a decent buck for a boat with a known bad motor rebuilding boats or motors should be looked at as if? you will really like to keep the boat another 5-10 years a good used motor may be a more practical choice IF indeed yours needs major internal repairs may i suggest you pull both cylinder heads take some pictures of pistons cylinder bores ect. we can discuss further all you will be out is a little time and a couple gaskets but the diagnosis will be definitive and eliminate a lot of guessing i have taken in more than a couple good motors in on trade that customers had other dealer say "it junk you need new motor" ended up needing new woodruff key or a stator / timer base so lets hold off worring untill we find out whats really going on

you can pull cylinder heads take pictures of bore and piston top we can discuss your options willl eliminate all the guess work and worse case if you have to throw it back together you will be out a couple gaskets

So going back to the original question, would my compression values be symptomatic to the issue I'm having?

So going back to the original question, would my compression values be symptomatic to the issue I'm having? yes BUT The compression alone is not off enough to make it die compression has to be 15 lbs difference or more to cause dieing out seldom is there only one thing wrong with a motor that old usually a combination of multiple smaller issues
