SOME OF OUR BEST IDEAS COME FROM OUR CUSTOMERS
HERE IS ONE THAT CAN SAVE YOU THOUSANDS OVER THE YEARS
SHRINK WRAP CLASS
Customer comes in and says hey i want my boat shrink wrapped and i would like to watch and learn how to do myself
We tell the guy OK but it takes a little longer to show you how to do it than to do it your self and he volunteers to pay us one hour extra labor
Ok i tell the the guy but i hope this means you will be buying the materials from me next year . He says yes and may be renting the shrik gun and tools We can do that as long as you leave a deposit
We have a deal !
Actually was kind of fun watching the guy burn his first hole in the shrink paper and begin to panic Then we pulled out the blue miracle patch take and reminded him the paper is a lot cheaper than the tape and the goal is to use as little tape as possible or its cheaper to have professional do it
So here is the run down
OF THE BASICS
first the NOT TO DO LIST
#1 no smell of gasoline WHAT SO EVER can BE PRESENT CHECK BILGE COMPARTMENT ON IO / INBOARDS RUN BLOWER FOR 30 MINUTES FIRST
#2 TAPE OVER GAS TANK VENTS MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE THE TAPE WHEN SHRINKING IS DONE
#3 NEVER SHRINK WRAP A WET INTERIOR OR
YOU WILL HAVE A MUSHROOM/MOLD GARDEN WHEN YOU UNCOVER THE BOAT IN THE SPRING. DRY IT OUT AS BEST AS POSSIBLE WITH FANS THEN IF ITS STILL A LITTLE DAMP ADD A COUPLE KEEP DRY POTS OF THE APPROPRIATE SIZE INSIDE THE BOAT
NOW LETS GET STARTED
If you plan on trailer your boat on the high way at speeds of 55 or so you need to do a extra special tight and strong job add a couple belly bands ect. to keep every thing in place
steps #1
you have to build some sort of frame either out of some cheap lumber of if you have time a nice reusable one out of pvc is good for a lot of years of service
the frame has to give the shrink wrap a decent pitch so most of the heavy snow will slide off the boat
the frame is nothing fancy just enough to make the tee pee effect in the paper
Then you tie it in place with some of the cheap rope or the shrink wrap banding add a couple extra bands to form a skeleton for the shrink paper to sit on
#2 cover all sharp edges with carpet scraps or card board with a little duck tape to hold it in place
#3 stretch some side and stern straps from the bow eye to the stern eyes make them as tight as possible
#4 pull the shrink paper over the the boat paper should be at least 12" past the banding all the way around boat
IMPORTANT TIP !!!
KEEP THE SHRINK PAPER CLEAN AND DRY DIRT WATER ANY THING ON THE PAPER MAKES IT HARD TO SHRINK WITH OUT BURNING THREW
#5 pull the paper under the banding make it as tight as posible
REMEMBER THE TIGHTER IT IS THE LESS SHRINKING YOU WILL HAVE TO DO
#6 TRIM THE PAPER SO THERE IS NO HUGE EXCESS ANY WHERE AROUND THE EDGE
#7 CHECK ALL YOU SAFETY STUFF GLOVES EQUIPMENT EYE GLASSES ECT. REMEMBER WE ARE DEALING WITH FIRE AND EXTREME HEAT
#8
FIRST YOU HAVE TO SEAL THE EDGE TO THE BAND THIS GET THE PAPER REAL HOT AND IT HAS TO STICK TOGETHER
you heat it till the point it ready to melt and tap it together with a leather heat resistant glove
#9 now your ready to shrink the rest
THE ONE MAIN THING TO REMEMBER IS THE PAPER SHRINKS WHEN IT COOLS NOT WHEN YOU HEAT IT
if you get it to hot as it cools the holes appear
all you need to do is warm it up and move on keep moving you can go back as many times as needed
ADD SOME VENTS AND ONE OR TOW BELLY BANDS ACROSS THE BOTTOM OF THE BOAT ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE GOING TO TRAILER
Its easy if some one shows you!
we would be glad to show a guy that want to do his own
as long as they at least buy the materials from us and we can rent you the tools if need be the gun is expensive so a deposit id required
