faced with gale warnings and gale force s/w winds this today am decided to give the protected water of Calumet Harbor a shot What blast we had lots of nice perch in and around the mouth of the calumet river with a couple brown trout for bonus fish we fished fat head minnows jigging off the bottom thew back a lot of small ones but put a bunch of nice ones in the box for a 3 man limit was cold and windy but still plenty comfortable in captain minnows Hewes craft 220 hard top great time to enjoy some tasty perch out of the cold water

What sets up a day of perch fishing like this > gale force winds out of the south west (the old saying west is the best for perch is 199% accurate) > the gale warning on the lake shut down the barge traffic cumming in and out of the calumet river water was was crystal clear the dirty water was being blown up north the cold clean and clear barge traffic started up around noon and after the first barge went thru the size of the fish we where catching dramatically reduced > Keith showed me how a long perch rod worked . I was using a ultra light ugly stick with shimano stardic reel 4-lb line was good perch rod have used this set up for years >but the long rod (with fire line) was so sensitive i could feel the minnow swimming on Keith's set up he was kicking but on the bigger fish and after checking out this rod reel line set up i could see why the bigger fish actually hit way lighter than the smaller ones and was so much easier to see what was going on by the minnow so looks like i will have to add one of these set up to my arsenal when targeting large perch on the big lake
