On 1/9/2016 the National Association of Charter boat Operators was held at East Chicago and the INDNR was there to give us an update on the state of the fishery. They did a good job of informing us on exactly what is happening with the fishery. For the most part things are not improving ,but sum of the news was positive. Final results of the alewives status is not in yet for the years end of 2015 , but they feel that the population is still on a big decline. The size of the round Goby is becoming much smaller than prior years. Stocking efforts will remain the same for 2016 as last years stocking. They are looking into doing something about the thousands of cormorants that live on the south end of the lake , the birds are definitely consuming a lot of bait that our Salmon and Perch feed on. Good News for East Chicago is that The Chief Biologist Informed us that Brown Trout and Chinook Salmon Stocking that has been taking place at Buffington Harbor will be moved to East Chicago Marina this spring . They are hoping this will help shore anglers have better success, since the best opportunity for them to have access is at this location and that the fish have a better chance of survival with boats and docks to acclimate around. Thanks to the INDNR FOR A VERY INFORMATIVE PRESENTATION. It was more than obvious that the fishery means as much to them as it does to all of us anglers.
