Hey guys
Frank from calumet marine here
>>>i want to assure you Lund makes a great boat and are worth fixing
and no i am not a lund dealer i wish i was because most lund owners are so loyal
>>>all boats have the same problem!
>>>not as many of the other brands are worth beaking out the thousands to fix
>>>In large part because of the wood industry and the EPA prior to 1999 treated wood was treated with Arsenic and Stricknine and a host of other verry dangerous and hazardous chemicals . it turned the wood carmel color
Was great for aluminum boats. Bugs would not go near it, repelled water, mold could not grow on it or in it !
but it was verry bad for the enviorment and the EPA put a stop to it
>>>. boat builders where cought off gaurd when the epa said NO MORE
>>>> They/boat builders tried copper ozide 5% wood = green wood
This after a while in a boat regardless of how they tried to seal it off / create a barrier between the copper and the aluminum they failed , eventually the copper oxide leaches out of the wood sits on the aluminum skin and eats thru the aluminum , makes a tiny hole and them the corrosion spreades under the paint and created a blister .
>>> every where there is a blister there is a hole my be too tiny to see with naked eye or where a thru bolt or scupper goes thru but there is a HOLE under every blister thats allowing corrosion to pop up the paint
lets talk about composit transoms
"composit" is a verry vauge discription can be carboard to pensky boart and 1000 differents between
just a vauge as "wood"
>>some composit are hard brittle and not flexable they will crack and break or stess the corners of aluminum boats rivetied aluminum boats are made to be light and flexable .there is a lot of good reasons most air planes are still to this day 'rivited' its not about welded vs rivited
>>>in my humble openion there is just no replacement for good grade A marine plywood for strength and flexibility it has a much larger scope of flexability and strength when its in good condition . theated with a flexable epoxy and all thru bolts sealed properly will out last most human life cycles
>>>but did you know as a maitense item you encouraged to check and tighten engine motor mounts annually? and simi annually remove one bolt at a time a recaulk with a poly sulfide sealer ? this is old school and used to be in all boat owners manuals and most motor installation guides
>> average time to remove custom constuct a new wood epoxy treated and install a tansom is 100 hrs on a transom that the splash well and live well are completly seperate components . on boat with one piece live well Por welded transom caps and corners (crestliner good example) average is 120 hrs X120 per hr shop labor rate
WOW that expensive PLUSS PARTS like a 115 dollar board 3 years ago in now 275 if you can get it .
>>i am not so sure they have yet found the rite combination in strenth and flexibility in the transom disigns time tells all these stories so at least for now we insist on only doing wood
we do adozen or so transoms every winter @ 50% labor discount with a deposit to save a slot usall takes about 6 weeks if there is no welding to be done
>>Thanks for reading this. only posted it to try to NOT have any one gettting frustrated trying to get thru on the phone. most of the problem boats are from the late 90s into the early 2010s and they have been showing their age lately with no new boat in sight even if you could justify the cost of a new one. vist calumet marine on face book or our forums page on our web site. dont expect any thing big and fancy we are just a little mom and pop shop thats been around a while and not afraid of a tough job or getting our hands dirty because we love boats and boaters .
thank you for the kind words of other posters we appreciate you folks
