I made a board to mount the 2 Big Jon down riggers that my Dad had in his attic for many years. It mounts to the cleats and spans across the back of the boat. It works well but it blocks access to the engine compartment, it's heavy and bulky, and I have concerns about the strength of the cleats especially when bouncing down the highway. I'm looking for a better option that is quicker, less bulky, and doesn't block access to the engine compartment. I am considering recessed rod holders and gimbal mounts. I have heard many people say they can work fine if mounted correctly with a backer plate. Many also say that it does not work well and can crack the fiberglass. Please advise on the gimbal mounts and any other suggestions would be appreciated, keeping in mind that I'm looking for an easily removable method. Thanks!! Here's some pics....

might be able to rig a trolling bar side to side on the gimble mounts if the two gimble mounts are tied together side to side it will eliminate the chance of damage from attaching riggers to them

That's definitely a good option but it still blocks the back of the boat and the motor access. Is there a way to use the gimble mount and have a short piece of trolling bar extend toward the front of the boat and mount to that rail? Would that provide enough anti-twist support to support a rigger?
Thanks for your input.

nick you have a relatively new boat just to be sure every thing is ok best check with the boat manufacturer what and how to mount riggers on it! Dont want to mount any thing in a way that it can posibly jeopardize warranty coverage get this is written form email is fine there are a lot of options to keep the back of the boat open but your most certainly would not to do any thing to damage the boat and jeopardize warranty coverage
